Rachel Hawkins’s novel titled The Heiress articulates a notion that revolves around mysteries of affluence, families, and absolute power. This notion is finds itself in the character of Ruby McTavish. She started as a Southern heiress and describes the life she lived after her kidnapping as a little girl and what brought her into the public light. McTavish married four men and all of them died in mysterious circumstances.

After the death of Ruby, her massive estate including the Ashby House was inherited by her adopted son Cam McTavish. After inheriting such great wealth cam decides to live a normal life with his wife and has nothing to do with that wealth. Fast forward ten years and historian Cam decides to visit the Ashby House to attend to family business. This was the time for his wife Jules to persuade him to confront his history and discover the wealth he had thrown away.

While in the mansion, the couple goes through lethal truths regarding the assassination of Ruby. And the disappearance and death of her children, which have remained a mystery for a long time. Rubbing letters are also illustrative of her suffering and how she made it to the top, and provide further context on powerful figures and their miserable lives. She starts to make correlations of her life with Ruby’s . And she makes it an interesting chapter on family and family dynamics, and identity.
