Not Quite a Ghost Review: When ghosts accompany her new life

The award-winning author of The Troubled Girls of Dragomir Academy sets forth a memorable and intensely emotional story of the ghosts that surround us—and the ones we carry on our inner. Not Quite a Ghost, a book by Anne Ursu, is a haunting story of a young girl who has been moved to a new mysterious house, hysteria, and inner trauma. As I love reviewing fantasy themes and middle-grade books, I loved writing book review of it.

As soon as eleven-year-old Violet starts middle school, shegets to know that her mother and stepdad are moving to another city. She is supposed to continue her school with her best friend. Violet, as she moves to her new house, feels that the house is haunted and begins to get flashbacks of the mysterious house. She becomes ill, and doctors are unconscious of the disease. Accusations of hysteria, invisible illnesses, and issues in middle school take hold of the scenario in the story.

Quite a Ghost Themes and Writing Style:

Not Quite a Ghost is middle-grade literature that explores themes related to the presence of spirits. The novel also fantasizes about the impacts of invisible illness, loneliness, social anxiety, and middle school anxiety. The complex family culture, health issues, and how friendships change are the overall imprints of the story.

Anne Ursu’s writing in “Not Quite a Ghost” combines poignant storytelling with themes of friendship and personal struggle.

The book describes a sort of hysteria and the intricacies of middle school dynamics. It captures quite beautifully some of the subtlety and nuance of adolescence.
